Panic flared through D.J.'s mind. Where could he be?
The deathlike stillness of the house told D.J. she was alone. At least the intruder had gonebut so had McCall. Unless, of course, someone had killed him.
A sound erupted from D.J.'s throat that was too much like a sob of pain for her comfort. Biting back on the panic threatening to take over her cool head, she stood and crossed the room to the coffee table, where she'd last seen her service weapon. The table lay on its side. D.J. picked it up and looked on the floor for the gun. The weapon wasn't there. A quick but thorough search of the area revealed the truth.
Whoever had been inside the cabin had taken her gun.
"Hell's bells," D.J. muttered. She took a deep breath and glanced down the hall toward the bedroom. Fear of what she might find there lay heavy on her mindbut she had to go on. Right now she'd give anything for Josie's reassuring presence. When the angel didn't appear, despite her wishes, D.J. had no choice but to walk down the long hallway toward the bedrooms alone. She, who had walked alone for most of her life and liked it, now realized how lonely being one against the world could really be.
Both rooms stood as empty as the rest of the houseand in as neat an order as they had been when she'd left. Whoever had ransacked the front room hadn't reached the bedrooms.
Why? Had they found what they were looking for and left? Where the hell had McCall gotten to?
